What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
A Breast Reduction is where a plastic surgeon reduces the size of overly large breasts. This is to relieve discomfort or pain, health and emotional problems or self-image issues.
What is involved with Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast Reduction surgery, otherwise known as reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure in which a plastic surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to lift and reduce the breast to a size which best suits the proportions of the patient. The main objective of Breast Reduction surgery is to ease the discomfort and pain resulting from overly large breasts.
There are a few things to consider before undergoing Breast Reduction Surgery.
Things to consider pre-surgery:
1. It is recommended to wait until after the breasts have fully developed. Patients who are breast feeding, pregnant or wanting to fall pregnant should defer surgery until after they have finished breast feeding in order to allow the breasts to fully involute and avoid recurrent drooping
2. Breast Reduction Surgery can potentially interfere with some diagnostic procedures such as mammogram and breast ultrasound.
3.Pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain can alter the outcome from previous breast reduction.
4. Breast feeding may not be feasible after breast reduction. Speak to the surgeon if you plan on breastfeeding after breast reduction.
5. Smokers have a higher risk of serious complications from breast reduction. Smoking should be stopped at least 4 weeks before surgery. Please note Perth Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Hanikeri does not operate on smokers unless they stop at least 4 weeks before the procedure.
What are the benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery?
There are several benefits of Breast Reduction surgery with the most pertinent being an alleviation of pain and discomfort from larger sized breasts. Patients who suffer from neck, back and shoulder pain due to the size of their breasts, should consider breast reduction surgery.
Many women find difficulty in exercising due to their larger sized breasts as it places too much discomfort on their body. Often women loose considerable weight when they are able to exercise more freely after breast reduction surgery.

"It was so painful. I had a lot of back problems. I really couldn't stand up straight for a long period of time. It started to hurt so bad that I couldn't take the pain. My neck was hurting so bad and I actually had some problems with my spine."
She opened up about her struggle, including difficulty with standing up for hours, constantly finding herself hunched over and her issues with finding clothing to fit. Once she underwent the procedure, Winter explained:
"I can't even really put it into words about how amazing it feels to really feel right."
