WHAT IS A NOSE JOB?
A nose-job, otherwise known as rhinoplasty, is a form of plastic surgery that improves the shape, size and overall appearance of the nose. Individuals may undergo a nose-job for aesthetic reasons as well as improving the functionality of the nose such as improving breathing problems.
HOW DOES A NOSE JOB WORK AND WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
Depending on the level of difficulty for each case, the surgeon will re-shape the internal and/or external bone and cartilage framework of the nose. Nose job surgery can be helpful when increasing or decreasing the bridge of the nose, reducing the size or width of the nose, narrowing the nostrils and reshaping the tip. It can also change the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
Perth Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr. Mark Hanikeri performs rhinoplasty via a very short incision across the vertical tissue between the nostrils (columella) and incisions inside the nostrils. Modifications are made to the cartilage and bone that form the framework of the nose. Sometimes, the position of the bones may need to be altered to make the nose look narrower and straighter. If the nose needs to be built up in certain areas, this can also be done using nasal cartilage, bone or cartilage from other sites.

Important things to note about rhinoplasty
If you are considering rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to remember your surgeon will re-shape your nose to best suit your facial features. This will ensure better results than trying to replicate someone else’s nose.
Typically, there is minimal pain post rhinoplasty surgery and a patient can return to work within 1-2 weeks. In some cases, a splint may be applied to the outside of the nose and there may be packs placed into each nostril. For patients who undergo minor changes to the nose, it may be a day surgery. Otherwise the patient may need to stay in hospital overnight.
Within 2-3 weeks, light and gentle exercise can be resumed as well as most normal activity. More strenuous exercise should be avoided up to at least 4-6 weeks post-surgery.
Patients may experience bruising on their eyes and upper cheeks after rhinoplasty. This may occur immediately after surgery and should not cause concern as it is normal. It is important to realise that the healing process is very gradual and patients should expect to see final results up to 1 year post surgery.
